Eco Trek Peru - Lares Trek 4D/3N

The Lares Valley trek is a great alternative for people that are interested in an authentic view of life in the highlands of Peru. The Lares valley is well known for its textiles and alpacas. The trek itself is at high altitude with the highest pass at approximately 4,400m finishing in the inviting hot springs of Lares town.

Día 1. Cusco – Cancha Cancha
We will leave Cusco at 7:00am on a private bus, and drive for 2h towards Huarán, the starting point of our trek. On this first día, we will walk for approximately 5h following an uphill path that will start in a valley with lush vegetation and will take us to our first campsite in Cancha Cancha, a small farming community in the middle of spectacular mountain scenery. We will eat lunch along the way. Once we arrive at Cancha Cancha, we will set up our campsite and get to know the local people and their way of living.

Día 2.Cancha Cancha – Quiswarani
We will leave camp at around 7.30 am to walk uphill to the first mountain pass of the trek, the Abra de Pachacutec (4400m/3h), from which we will enjoy awe-inspiring views of glacier lagoons and the surrounding valleys. Along the hike, we will also have spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains in the area, such as Colquecruz, Minas and Sirijuani. We will have lunch after the pass, to then descend to Quiswarani, a small peasant and textile community where we will set up our second campsite.

Día 3. Quiswarani – Cuncani
Leaving Quiswarani at around 7.30am, and following an uphill path, passing along the beautiful Queuñaqocha lagoon, towards the second mountain pass, the Abra de Willkiccasa (4100m/2h), with impressive views on both sides of the pass, especially of the Colquecruz and Pitusiray mountains. In the afternoon we will continue on the trail along changing puna, lakes and agricultural areas with roaming deer until we arrive in Cuncani 3h later, where we will have supper and camp.

Día 4. Cuncani – Lares
We leave Cuncani at 8.00am to walk down a fertile valley with typical vegetation, crops and agricultural communities. Along the trail we will see native flowers such as begonias and wild orchids. After an approximately 2h walk we will arrive in Lares, capital of the district with the same name, a large village whose principal attraction are its pleasant hot springs, where we can enjoy a dip. After having lunch, we will board a private bus that will take us back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time around 8.00pm.

What you need to bring:

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek
  • Rain jacket or poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Strong footwear, ideally trekking or sport shoes
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleece and sweaters
  • Sleeping bag (it can be hired at our agency for US$ 10.00 / 4 días)
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Camera, films and batteries
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain or cold
  • Sun block
  • Insect repellent
  • Toilet paper
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, etc.
  • Water bottle and sterilizing tablets (ie. Micropur)
  • Mattress: will be provided by the agency but is to be carried by you
  • towel
