Cusco, Peru

Cusco, what does it conjure up. Nestled high in the Andes at 3200m.
A beautiful city built of both Inca and Spanish Colonial architecture,
with a remarkable history. The foundations of Inca palaces, adapted to
form Spanish churches. One of the last Inca strongholds, which to this
day has many ghosts of that history. The magnificent ruins of Saqsaywaman,
the city of Pisac and the simply brilliant Citadel of Machu Picchu.
This tour is for the curious; those who wish to learn more about the
fantastic history that Cusco, centre of the universe holds. In our 5
* journey through the land of the Incas we can discover some of the secrets
of the Incas and also see how they lives of the indigenous people still
mirrors that of the Inca. Please read our schedule and feel free to ask
any questions related to the tour.
Day 1. Arrival Jorge Chavez International Airport, Lima, Peru. Here
we will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to our hotel.
Day 2. Buffet breakfast at our hotel and transfer to the airport for
our one-hour flight to Cusco. We will be collected and transferred to
the beautiful Sol Y Luna. This paradise of bungalows set in rural Urubamba
in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. On arrival we have time to unwind,
unpack and adjust to the change in altitude. Although fortunately the
altitude in The Sacred Valley is much lower at 2800m therefore making
the acclimatisation easier.
In the afternoon after a light lunch (not included) we will take our
private transport to the salt mines at Salineras. These mines are still
worked by hand and we have a fantastic opportunity to take photos and
wander around this natural wonder.
We have the evening free to relax and enjoy the space and tranquillity
here in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Day 3. Today we have a full Sacred Valley tour, visiting the city of
Pisac, one of the largest left by the Incas, with its varied types of
construction, temples, terraces, housing. Pisac is also home to one of
the largest handicraft markets in the area and we have a great opportunity
to buy locally produced goods. Alpaca, wool, ceramics and paintings are
among some of the things that you can purchase. After a buffet lunch
of both Peruvian and International cuisine we will continue to the town
of Ollanytambo. Ollanytambo town is the only Inca settlement, in Peru
that is still inhabited, and the ruins are of particular archaeological
importance, a huge battle was fought here between the Spaniards and Manco
Inca around 1540, terminating in the quartering of Manco Inca. Evening
free to relax.
Day 4. A very early rise for our 6am train to Aguas Calientes and the
spiritual and beautiful ruins of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu untouched
by the Spaniards, located further down the Urubamba River, the Sacred
River. As we arrive earlier than most others we have more opportunity
to enjoy our guided tour through the ruins, and then the opportunity
to explore, to see, learn and make our own judgements about the Incas
and their way of life. Lunch will be served at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary
Hotel. With the rest of the afternoon free in Machu Picchu to take photographs,
to sit, to enjoy the spectacular view of the Andes falling into the jungle.
Day 5. Today we make our way to Cusco. On our way to Cusco we will take
advantage of the close proximity of the small Andean village where the
people still work with donkeys and travel by foot between the towns.
This vast agricultural area is a fascinating insight into the life of
the Incas and may explain the experimental terraces of Moray. A beautiful
place to sit and contemplate the different microclimates that allowed
the Incas to grow a variety of crops in a small area. On our return to
Cusco we will check into our 5* Monasterio hotel. We will have the afternoon
and free to do some shopping and walk the small cobbled streets of Cusco.
We also have the evening free to try out some of the high quality restaurants
that are available in Cusco. If you don’t know a restaurant please
ask, we are happy to recommend something that will suit all requirements.
