Porteadores Inka Nan is currently being registered as an NGO in Peru for the benefit of all porters. Porteadores Inka Nan means Inka Trail Porters and is a name chosen by the porters themselves and the organisation itself will be run through a network of porter delegates from each Andean community where porters live.

PIN’s main objective is to help the porters of the classic Inka Trail and other trails, which are currently being opened up throughout Peru.

These men and women are subjected to atrocious working conditions. Officially the 7000 porters carry loads of 25kg, but on occasion much more, and can work on meagre diets, sometimes as little as 500 calories per day. In addition they sleep in unsuitable conditions usually on the floor of an open, floorless dining tent, always cold, sometimes raining and at times in snow. Even the best agencies do not provide the basics like sleeping bags or mattresses, rainproof- ponchos or even light.

The Porters are the driving force behind tourists trips on the world famous Inka Trail to Machu Picchu but it is rarely noticed that these people who carry all the equipment and food and basically set up and prepare all camps are treated with such disregard, on wages of as little as $5 per day. They suffer both from chronic back and muscle problems as well as accidents that occur on the trail as they run from site to site on the original Inka steps. Work on the Inka Trail appears attractive to young boys from far away rural communities, but once in Cusco they find conditions very hard and the work keeps them away from their families and crops at inappropriate times, affecting the economy and agro biodiversity of the Andean region. Many would prefer to work nearer to their homes but currently lack the self-confidence, education and training to offer other sought-after routes to tourists.
