Currency
Currency, Nuevo Sol
$1 = 3.2 soles (approx).
£1 = 5 soles,
€ = 4 soles
Dollars must be in pristine condition or they will not be changed.
Ask for new notes. There are many places to exchange dollars in and
around Cusco but always have some soles. If taking longer trip soles
are necessary.
Prices
If eating out well as it is your holiday expect to pay $20-25US per
person wine included.
A good pizza or maybe some good quality local food costs $7US per
person.
Taxi’s in Cusco, S/.2 after 10pm S/.3.
Hotels are available from $30US for a clean and simple, double room
with private bathroom to the most luxurious 5 star monastery hotel
at $375US per night ,
INNOCULATIONS
A doctor should always be consulted for the latest information
about what is needed in Peru. In the larger cities there is good medical
attention available, you should bring insurance.
General: Polio, Tetanus, Hepatitis A. Jungle Areas only: Yellow fever & Malaria
Local Epidemics: Typhoid & Cholera
Rabies vaccinations are available locally.
Weather
In the Andes there are only 2 seasons wet and dry, the wet season
is from November to March and is the best season for birds, especially
hummingbirds, orchids and of course rain. Avg temp- Day 10-15C 59F
Night 5-7C 44F
The dry season from April to October is great for trekking, hiking,
biking with a beautiful blue sky and fabulous starry nights. Avg temp
day 20-25C 77 F night 2C 35F
Jungle – The jungle is generally very humid and very hot. In
the rainy season there is a lot of rain and it can be muddy. You can
also have friajes which is acold weather front lasting about a week
a couple of time a year. Always take something warm.
Beach – Good weather all year round, 22 C 72 F to 100 F 37C.

Clothing
Because of the weather layers are invaluable. In the rainy season
never leave home without a rain jacket or umbrella, you just never
know, but wear a T-shirt underneath. Winter: hats, gloves, lots of
warm things, short sleeves during the day.
Trekking conditions
Best from April to Oct/Nov. Lots of sunscreen, good walking boots.
Mosquito Spray (for trekking, Machu Picchu and jungle trips). Don’t
forget bags to collect your rubbish (supplied with tours), zip lock
bags for toilet paper (supplied), smokers please do not litter, torch,
batteries (please take the used ones home), sleeping bag (if trekking),
day pack, re-usable water bottle, (2 litres of water for your first
day, you will be supplied with on your trip.
We supply you with a duffle bag to be carried by either your porter
or your mule, tents, mattresses, sleeping bag (if required), you must
bring a small day pack (with inbuilt water bottle is better) for your
camera, rain gear, sunblock etc.
Altitude
Cusco is at 3200m and is at high altitude causing breathing to be
a problem. To combat the effect of the altitude it is advised to drink
plenty of liquids on your first couple of days, coca tea is a wonder.
Most people are fine, some experience headaches, vomiting, dizziness
it can be a serious disease.
