Day 1. Using the Sacred Valley of the Incas as our
base we prepare our bikes and equipment and head to the starting point
of our 5 day mountain biking trip. We make our way upwards 45km (around
1 ½ hours) to the Abra de Lares (4470m). At our starting point
we have the beautiful view of mountain peaks and alpaca herds grazing
and time to choose our descent.
Here we have two descents to decide between, the first and easier is by the road
that descends 24km to the town of Lares (3200m) and the thermal baths.
The second option if for the experienced mountain biker that wants
the thrill of some serious single track. This route is on old trails
that run parallel to
the road with various exits and entrances. Leaving the single track at the
town of Lares and doing the last kilometre on the road.
Tonight we eat and camp at the side of the thermal baths making it
a very short walk to our beds.
Day 2. Beginning our day early we have breakfast
in preparation for the 38km, 1600m descent to the beautiful mountain
stream where we can bathe, and our lunch point. Today’s descent
takes us through the different bio-spheres and shows us some of the mega
diversity of Peru. The beautiful waterfalls and the change in wildlife,
the coca fields, coffee and pineapple farms.
After lunch we continue a further 25km on our mountain bikes descending
some 500m to our campsite for the night at 1190m.
A recommendation for the nights entertainment, a tin of mosquito repellent
in the hand and a paddle (or a swim) in the river.
|
Day 3. Today we cycle a total of 56km and reach the
lowest point of our journey the town of Chahuares. Today our cycling
is in the high jungle, yet another change of atmosphere. The tropical
climate and the beautiful flowers make a perfect background for this
trip.
We also have the opportunity to see and experience the problems that
people have in getting their A-Grade quality products moved from this
remote area to the market.
Having biked 150kms we set up camp beside the river under a parrot feeding
area where we can watch them go about their daily routine.
Dinner will be served under the stars on the banks of the river.

Day 4. We have a fun but short day today. Cycling to
the town of Quillabamba (1020m) some 45km away. About half way we stop
for lunch at the waterfalls of Siete Tinajas (7 Small Baths) and a quick
invigorating shower.
After drying off we continue to the town of Quillambamba (The City of
Eternal Summer) and a bed for the night. This once prosperous market
town still shows the pride that the people have in their home and has
some of the most beautiful squares of the whole of Peru.
Day 5.We have our last transfer today to the
Malaga Pass (4200m), and what could be the most radical single track
of your life. The choice of 2 roads a class 4/5 single track, or class
2/3 road. Guides are available to cover both options.
Both options take us down 1400m for a distance of around 20km, to the
town of Ollantytambo and our transfer to Cusco.
