Machu Picchu

Cusco, what does it conjure up. Nestled high in the Andes at 3200m. A beautiful city built of both Inca and Spanish Colonial architecture, with a remarkable history. One of the last Inca strongholds, which still has many ghosts of that history. The magnificent ruins of Saqsaywaman, the fortress of Pisac and the simply brilliant Citadel of Machu Picchu. X-Zone situated 3 miles outside Cusco to the north east is part of the Saysaywaman Sanctuary and holds its own secrets, and the beautiful Inca Viaduct that is Chacan.

This tour is for the budding archaeologist; those who wish to learn more about the fantastic history that Cusco, centre of the universe holds. This holiday is a voyage of discovery where your guide will open your eyes to the fantastic Inca culture. In our 5 * journey through the land of the Incas we can discover some of the secrets of the Incas and also see how the lives of the indigenous people still mirror that of the Inca. Please read our schedule and feel free to ask any questions related to the tour.

Day 1. Arrival Jorge Chavez International Airport, Lima, Peru. Here we will be met by one of our representatives and transferred to our hotel.

Day 2. Buffet breakfast at our hotel and transfer to the airport for our one-hour flight to Cusco. In Cusco we will be transferred to our hotel and will have some time to relax, unpack and eat lunch before boarding out transport to the ruins of Tipon the first stop on our archaeological tour.
Tipon ruins are rarely visited but contain some of the finest agricultural terraces in existence; in addition they are thought to be an agricultural laboratory and a temple. After our expert guided tour we will drive a little further South to the ruins of Pikillaqta, a Wari city that has a different type of architectural style to that most commonly seen in the area. Our guide will steer us through the different cultures that have lived in this area.

Day 3. Today we have a full day of ruins. We will visit the palace of Saqsaywaman, with its giant stones. One of the most powerful energy points in the worlds. We also visit, Tambomachay an Inca water temple, Puca Pucara, a control point at the entrance of Cusco, Templo de la Luna (The Moon Temple), Zona X (X-Zone), and Chacan. At Chacan we will have the opportunity to enjoy a boxed lunch by the side of the river. On our trip round the ruins our guide will explain the significance of these ruins and show us the different forms of construction that the Inca used.
We will have the night free to enjoy the town of Cusco, and its world class restaurants. If you are unsure where to eat please ask as there is something for everyone.

Day 4. Today we have a full Sacred Valley tour, visiting the Fortress of Pisac, one of the largest left by the Incas, with its varied types of construction, temples, terraces and living areas. Pisac is also home to one of the largest handicraft markets in the area and we have a great opportunity to buy locally produced goods. Alpaca, wool, ceramics and paintings are among some of the things that you can purchase. After a buffet lunch of both Peruvian and International cuisine we will continue to the town of Ollanytambo. Ollanytambo town is the only Inca settlement, in Peru, that is still inhabited, and the ruins are of particular archaeological importance, a huge battle was fought here between the Spaniards and Manco Inca during 1537, terminating in the quartering of Manco Inca.
Tonight we will stay in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the town of Urubamba at the peaceful bungalows of the Sol y Luna. Night free to relax.

Day 5. An early rise for the 6am train to Aguas Calientes, and the ruins of Machu Picchu. As we arrive earlier than most others we have more opportunity to enjoy our guided tour through the ruins, and then the opportunity to explore, to see, learn and make our own judgements about the Incas and their way of life. Lunch will be served at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Hotel. With the rest of the afternoon free in Machu Picchu to take photographs, to sit, to enjoy Machu Picchu and the Andes. We will spend tonight in Aguas Calientes, evening free to enjoy this tropical town.

Day 6. Today we have a free day to either visit Machu Picchu or spend the day wandering around the town of Aguas Calientes, or at the thermal baths that gave the town its name. For those that wish a guide can be provided. Late afternoon we will board our train back to Cusco.
