Peruvian Rainforest

This trip is about the journey, using bicycles as the main form of transport and rafting to keep the pace high we travel on country roads from the magical town of Cusco nestled in the high Andes (3200m), to the Citadel of Machu Picchu in its tropical climate, to the Pongo de Mainiqui and the rich jungle. This adventure holiday takes you to all these places and gives a stunning impression of Peru. This is a dream location that will leave you wanting more.

Day 1. Arrival Jorge Chavez International Airport, Lima, Peru. Here we will be met by our representative and transferred to our hotel.

Day 2. Buffet breakfast at our hotel and transfer to the airport for our one-hour flight to Cusco. We will be collected and transferred to our centrally located 3* hotel to unpack and receive our briefing. After a light lunch we will rejoin to enjoy a leisurely walk from the ruins of Tambomachay to Saqsaywaman, taking in other sites of interest on the way. This downhill walk is a fantastic introduction to Cusco and provides an insight into life of the Inca’s. We have the evening free to relax and enjoy Cusco.

Day 3. Early breakfast and transfer to Zurite (3300m) with a visit to the colonial church, from here we will mount our bikes taking the flat road to Huarocondo. Lunch will be served near the town in the high Andes of Peru. From Huarocondo we cycle downhill on single track roads to Pacchac (2800m) through the Inca terraces to the town of Ollantytambo. Here we will spend the night and enjoy another meal together.

Day 4. Today we have our first experience of the Urubamba River. The river that is going to guide us on our trip through the department of Cusco. White water rafting on the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Class II to III rapids. Passing through the Inca terraces to the town of Ollantytambo where we will have lunch.
After lunch we will have the opportunity to visit the town itself which is the only Inca settlement still inhabited in Peru, and the ruins of Ollantytambo that overlook the small town. We have the night free.

Day 5. Rising with the sun for our 6am train to Aguas Calientes and the spiritual and beautiful ruins of Machu Picchu. As we arrive earlier than most others we have more opportunity to enjoy an expertly guided tour through the ruins, and then the opportunity to explore, to see, learn and make our own judgements about the Incas and their way of life. We will have the rest of the afternoon free in Machu Picchu to take photographs to sit, to enjoy the spectacular view of the Andes falling into the jungle before we board our train for the return trip to Ollantytambo.

Day 6. Boarding our private transport we make our way from Ollantytambo (2860m) to the Abra de Malaga (4330m) and the spectacular mountain called Veronica. From here it is downhill all the way, by bike, as we pass through small high jungle farms and plantations with the temperature ever increasing. Our rest place for the night the bustling market town of Quillabamba where we have a free night.

Day 7. Back on the river again. After a quick dip in the pool we will enter our raft and make our way north towards the town of Echarati. Being on the river which is not used commercially we have the opportunity to learn more about the wildlife of this area and of course enjoy the exhilarating Class IV rapids.
On reaching our disembarkation point we will transfer to the town of Palma Real (770m) and our campsite for the night.

Day 8. Our last day of cycling, we continue downwards through the ever thickening forest and dusty roads. Passing through many small towns and villages to the end of the road, the village of Ivochote (520m). Here we will camp for the night on the banks of the river.

Day 9. Boarding our motorized canoe for the last part of our journey through the magical Pongo de Mainique, where we will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of this truly spiritual area.
Upon leaving the Pongo we will make our way to the Esperanza Lodge our home for the next few days. Afternoon free to relax or if you are feeling up to it volunteer.

Day 10. An incredibly early rise so that we may visit a Cock of the Rock feeding area that is situated near the lodge. On our return we will have breakfast and a guided tour of the various plantations that make up our jungle centre. For those that want we will take to the jungle trails to see the incredible scenery, to do learn about the indigenous plants and animals in the area. If you are staying at the lodge you can relax in a hammock and watch the world go by. All meals will be served at the lodge.

We also have a fantastic opportunity to go to the Pongo de Mainique for a few hours, swim by the waterfall and bask on a rock. All meals will be served at the lodge.

Day 12. An early rise and we board the canoe for the one hour journey trip to the Machiguenga town of Timpia and the airport. Before boarding our one hour flight to Cusco we have the option to visit Timpia. On return to Cusco we transfer to our hotel, afternoon free.
