Inca Trail 4 Days/3 Nights
It is one of the most promoted treks in Peru and South America, and we assure you that you´ll get to Machupicchu by the enigmatic Incan Trail, the famous hike that will take us across the mountains, to the Sacred City of Machupicchu which was elected as one of the Seven New Wonders of the Modern World, and is the mandatory destination of the Incan Trail´s hikers.
DAY 01
We´ll leave early from your hotel, in the direction of Km. 82 of the railroad track, where our expedition starts, and after having met our support team, we´ll get the backpacks ready and will cross the bridge over the Incas´ Sacred River, to enter in a dry forest which will be our first ecosystem on the itinerary. On the way, we´ll have a chance to observe how the local people live, as they mainly are farmers who grow corn and potatoes on their land. After a two hour hike, we´ll get to Miskay, a resting place, protected by avocado and eucalyptus trees. Afterwards, we´ll move on to Patallaqta or Qentimarka which was a road checkpoint, as well as a religious and administrative center, at the bottom of the valley. There, we´ll change direction, to walk towards the North-west, and will enter the Cusichaca Gorge, in which we´ll have lunch, and afterwards, we´ll go on with our ascension to the village of Guayllabamba, where we´ll once again change direction towards the North, to get to our campsite, in Ayapata, over 3,300 m.a.s.l., in a place with a privileged view, and distant from the other campsites.
DAY 2
Today, we´ll have a more demanding day, because, after a succulent breakfast, we´ll ascend for an average of two hours, through an unca tree (Native trees) forest, to Llulluchapata, at 3,700 m.a.s.l., and from there, we´ll contemplate the snow-capped Mount Huayanay, as well as the ascension that is still to be covered, to get to the most elevated point of the hike, the Huarmi Huañusca Mountain Pass, at 4,220 m.a.s.l., from which we´ll be able to observe the mountains and the path that will take us to our lunch place, in Pacaymayo (3,600 m.a.s.l.). After a repairing rest, we´ll once again go uphill towards the Archaeological Complex of Runkurakay, where we´ll appreciate a fortress that was used as a checkpoint for the human traffic entering the Royal Path, through the mountain pass that bears the same name. Afterwards, we´ll go by the Archaeological Site of Sayaqmarka, from which we´ll sight our campsite, located at 3,700 m.a.s.l., in Chaquicocha, a place with a privileged view over the Vilcabamba Mountain Range, and situated amidst a very special forest full of tangaras and orchids.
DAY 3
Today, we´ll enjoy a superinteresting day, going downhill through the dwarf forest, descending about 1,000 meters, to the famous cloud forest, passing by Phuyupatamarca, an Incan city nestled in the clouds, with the best view of the great snow-capped Mount Salkantay, the Tutelary Apu (Main Sacred Mountain) for the whole valley of the Incas and Machupicchu. After our descent and visit of Intipata, a spectacular set of benched terraces, we´ll reach our campsite, in Huiñay Huayna, at 2,600 m.a.s.l., where we´ll take a shower, wish farewell to our support team and get prepared to cover the last kilometers, before we get to see Machupicchu, our destination and main reason of this trip.
DAY 4
This morning, we´ll get up early, to cover the 6 km. that separate us from the Inti Punku or Sun´s Gate, where we´ll be able to see the Incan City of Machupicchu for the first time. Then, we´ll have the opportunity to enter the Sacred City through the Main Path, and enjoy a guided visit that will reveal Machupicchu´s enigmas to us, as our guide will be showing Machupicchu to us in its true dimension, while we´ll appreciate the existing harmony between a master construction work erected by the Incan culture and one of the world´s most bio-diverse places, surrounded by sacred natural elements, such as the Willkamayu River (The Incas´ Sacred River) and the mountains or Apus that protect that Wonder of the Modern World.
